How much data does YouTube use?
Summary:
YouTube uses around 30 MB per hour at 144p, about 1.5 GB per hour at 1080p HD, and up to 23 GB per hour at 4K. A 10-minute scroll session at 720p eats roughly 250 MB. One 90-minute movie in 1080p burns about 2.25 GB.
Worried about your data plan? You can watch YouTube abroad without paying for data at all. Firsty Free gives you mobile data in 185+ countries by watching short ads instead of paying. No contract, no credit check, no roaming bill.
Below: a full quality-by-quality breakdown, how YouTube compares to Netflix and TikTok, and seven ways to cut your YouTube data use in half.
YouTube data usage per minute, per hour, and per video length
| Quality | Per minute | Per hour | 10-min video | 30-min show | 2-hour movie |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 144p | 0.5–1.5 MB | 30–90 MB | 5–15 MB | 15–45 MB | 60–180 MB |
| 240p | 3–4.5 MB | 180–270 MB | 30–45 MB | 90–135 MB | 360–540 MB |
| 360p | 5–7.5 MB | 300–450 MB | 50–75 MB | 150–225 MB | 600–900 MB |
| 480p (SD) | 8–11 MB | 480–660 MB | 80–110 MB | 240–330 MB | 0.96–1.3 GB |
| 720p (HD) | 20–45 MB | 1.2–2.7 GB | 200–450 MB | 0.6–1.35 GB | 2.4–5.4 GB |
| 1080p (Full HD) | 50–68 MB | 3–4.1 GB | 0.5–0.68 GB | 1.5–2 GB | 6–8.2 GB |
| 1440p (2K) | 75–135 MB | 4.5–8.1 GB | 0.75–1.35 GB | 2.25–4 GB | 9–16.2 GB |
| 2160p (4K) | 95–385 MB | 5.7–23 GB | 0.95–3.85 GB | 2.85–11.5 GB | 11.4–46 GB |
| 4320p (8K) | 150–580 MB | 9–35 GB | 1.5–5.8 GB | 4.5–17.5 GB | 18–70 GB |
YouTube auto-adjusts quality based on your connection speed. The default on mobile is often 480p, and on Wi-Fi it bumps to 720p or higher. Force a lower quality manually to save data.

YouTube vs. Netflix vs. TikTok vs. Spotify: which one drains your data fastest?
| App | Data per hour (HD) | Data per hour (low quality) |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | 1.5 GB (720p) | 90 MB (144p) |
| Netflix | 3 GB (1080p) | 300 MB (Save Data mode) |
| TikTok | ~840 MB | ~280 MB |
| Spotify | 150 MB (Very High audio) | 40 MB (Normal audio) |
| WhatsApp video call | 480 MB | n/a |
| Instagram scrolling | ~720 MB | n/a |
YouTube is more flexible than most streaming apps because of its 144p option, which gets you down to roughly 90 MB per hour. Netflix in Save Data mode drops to around 300 MB per hour, which is impressive but still more than 3x YouTube's floor. TikTok looks lighter per hour than YouTube HD, but most people use it for much longer sessions, so the total damage to your data plan is often larger.

How to cut your YouTube data usage by 50% or more
Force a lower quality. In the YouTube app, tap the gear icon during playback, then Quality, then "Data saver." This caps videos at 480p. On most phone screens the difference between 480p and 1080p is barely noticeable, but the data difference is 4 to 5 times.
Turn off autoplay. YouTube → Settings → Autoplay → off. Stops you from accidentally watching a three-hour video chain when you only meant to watch one clip.
Disable HD on mobile data. YouTube → Settings → Video quality preferences → "On mobile networks" → "Data saver." HD only plays on Wi-Fi.
Pre-download on Wi-Fi. YouTube Premium lets you download videos to watch offline. If you have Premium, this is the single biggest data saver for travel.
Mute autoplay previews. Settings → General → Playback in feeds → Off. (Older app versions may label this "Muted playback in feeds.") The thumbnails on the home page autoplay video previews and quietly burn data even when you're not watching.
Turn off uploads on mobile data. YouTube → Settings → Uploads → Wi-Fi only. Stops big phone-camera files from uploading the moment you leave Wi-Fi.
Switch to YouTube Music for audio-only content. Listening to a music video or a podcast-style channel? YouTube Music streams roughly 50 MB per hour instead of 1.5 GB. Massive savings for the same content.
How to check your YouTube data usage on iPhone and Android
On iPhone:
Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data)
Scroll down to "Cellular Data" and find YouTube in the app list
The number underneath shows total data used since the last reset
To start fresh, scroll to the bottom and tap "Reset Statistics"
On Android (Samsung, Pixel, and others):
Open Settings → Connections (or Network & Internet) → Data usage
Tap "Mobile data usage" and find YouTube in the list
Tap YouTube to see foreground vs. background usage on a monthly chart
Inside the YouTube app: There's no built-in data counter, but tapping your profile icon → Settings → Account gives you control over playback quality, downloads, and background data permissions.
The simplest answer: stop counting data
If you find yourself watching the data meter while you watch YouTube, Firsty Free fixes that. Genuinely free mobile data in 185+ countries. Just watch a short ad to keep going. No contract, no credit check, no roaming bill, no surprise charges.
Or if you want more: Daily plans from €1, or unlimited First Class data from €3.10 per day.
Frequently asked questions
How much data does 1 hour of YouTube use?
At 480p, about 500 MB. At 720p HD, about 1.5 GB. At 1080p Full HD, about 3 GB. At 4K, between 6 and 23 GB depending on the video.
How much YouTube can I watch on 1 GB of data?
At 480p, about 1.5 to 2 hours. At 720p HD, 30 to 45 minutes. At 1080p, 15 to 20 minutes. At 4K, less than 5 minutes.
Does YouTube use less data than Netflix?
Yes, at its lowest setting. YouTube's 144p uses around 90 MB per hour. Netflix's lowest setting (Save Data mode) uses around 300 MB per hour, better than it used to be, but still more than 3x YouTube's floor. At 1080p both apps land at roughly 3 GB per hour.
Do YouTube Shorts use less data than regular videos?
Slightly less. Shorts are vertical and shorter, and YouTube serves them at a lower bitrate. Expect about 30% less data than a regular video of the same length.
Does YouTube Premium use less data?
No. Premium plays the same video files. But Premium lets you download videos to watch offline, which is the most reliable way to avoid using mobile data at all.
Can I watch YouTube without using any mobile data?
Three ways. On Wi-Fi. On downloaded videos via YouTube Premium. Or on Firsty Free, which gives you mobile data in 185+ countries by watching short ads.
Why does YouTube use so much data?
Higher resolutions mean more pixels per frame, which means larger files. A 4K video has nine times the pixels of a 720p video. Sound and frame rate also affect data. A 60fps video uses around 30% more than 30fps.
