How to Cancel Telenet the Right Way

You can cancel a Telenet contract free of charge and without giving a reason once six months have passed since it started, fixed term or indefinite. Belgian telecom law guarantees this, and Telenet has to accept your cancellation in writing, by letter, email, or a form in your online account. The only cost that can still apply is a separate one for a device you got free or discounted, and it never touches the subscription itself. This applies whether you originally signed up with Telenet in store, online, or over the phone.

What the six month rule actually covers

TimingWhat you owe
Before 6 months, fixed term contractSubscription fees owed up to the end of month 6, nothing beyond that
After 6 months, any contract typeNothing for the subscription itself
Any time, if a device was bundledRemaining device value, separate from the subscription

This comes from BIPT, the Belgian telecom regulator, and it applies to every contract type: mobile, internet, or TV. The device fee follows a depreciation table capped at 24 months, ask Telenet for it directly if you're unsure what you'd owe.

Worked example: say you got a phone worth 480 euros for free when you signed up, spread over the maximum 24 month table, that works out to 20 euros a month. Cancel after 10 months and you'd still owe roughly 280 euros for the remaining 14 months on that table, separate from whatever you do or don't owe on the subscription itself.

How to actually cancel Telenet

  1. Choose a written channel: registered letter, email, or the cancellation form in your Telenet online account, any of these count as valid under Belgian law.

  2. State that you're cancelling and the date you want it to take effect. No reason required.

  3. Keep a copy of what you sent and note the date, since that's what starts your notice period.

  4. If you're switching rather than just leaving, ask your new provider whether they can coordinate the transfer so you're not left without coverage, most new operators handle this as a standard part of onboarding.

If you also have internet or TV with Telenet

Everything above covers the mobile side. If Telenet is also your internet or TV provider, switching that over works differently: BIPT's Easy Switch system means your new provider handles the cancellation for you, once you give them your Easy Switch ID, found on your latest bill. You don't contact Telenet directly for this part, the new provider does it. Easy Switch only applies when internet or TV is involved though, it doesn't cover mobile-only accounts.

One thing Easy Switch doesn't cover: any modem, TV box, or other hardware you're renting rather than owning has to go back. Telenet usually sends a return label or asks you to drop it at a collection point, and skipping this step is a common way people end up with a real, sometimes sizeable fee weeks after they thought they were done.

What happens after you send your cancellation

Once your notice period starts, you keep full service until it ends, nothing gets cut off early just because you've cancelled. Your final invoice is prorated to the exact day your contract ends, so you're not charged for a full month you didn't use. If you're porting your number to a new operator, that transfer typically happens on or near your contract's end date, coordinated between the two operators rather than something you have to time yourself down to the day.

What's already there, and what's coming

This isn't really about Telenet specifically. It's an industry that spent years building contracts around long lock in periods and confusing device bundling, in Belgium and everywhere else. We think Belgium deserves connectivity that's actually accessible to anyone and Firsty is bringing a simpler and more flexible mobile experience to Belgium.

What if your bill goes up before you're ready to leave

If Telenet raises the price of your plan for a reason other than the standard inflation linked adjustment already written into your contract, you get the right to cancel free of charge, even mid contract, no matter how much time is left on it. That free exit window lasts three months from the moment you were notified of the increase. It doesn't apply if the increase is purely the yearly indexation your contract already spells out, that one you're stuck with.

If Telenet won't process your cancellation

Cancellation disputes are consistently the single most common complaint category the Ombudsman for Telecommunications handles, over 900 cases in 2025 alone, mostly about requests being ignored, delayed, or billing that continues after someone's already switched. If that happens to you, you can file a free complaint with the Ombudsman for Telecommunications once you've already tried resolving it directly with Telenet and gotten nowhere. It's an independent, no cost mediation service, not a courtroom, and it exists specifically for disputes like this.

FAQ

Can I cancel Telenet before six months are up? Yes, but you'll owe the subscription fees for whatever's left until month 6, not the rest of your full contract term, plus any device residual cost. After six months, cancelling the subscription itself is free.

Does Telenet have to let me leave immediately? Once you're past the automatic renewal point, you choose the exact date, including immediately. Before that, a notice period of up to one month can apply.

What happens to a device I got with my Telenet plan? You keep it, but you still owe whatever's left on its depreciation table, separate from the subscription.

Do I need to give Telenet a reason? No. Belgian law says operators cannot require one.

Can I keep my phone number if I switch away from Telenet? Yes, as long as you stay in the same phone zone. You sign an authorization with your new operator, and they handle the transfer, you don't need to cancel Telenet yourself for this. You can port immediately or pick a date.

How long does switching operators actually take? Once your new operator has done the technical check with Telenet, the number transfer itself takes at most one business day. If it runs more than a day past the agreed date, you're entitled to compensation, request it from your new operator within six months.

Can I cancel within 14 days if I signed up online or by phone? Yes, if you signed up entirely remotely, online or by phone, not in a physical shop, you have 14 calendar days to cancel free of charge and without giving a reason.

Can I cancel Telenet with just a phone call? Not reliably. Belgian law requires cancellation through a written channel, a letter, email, or online form, so you have proof of the date. A phone call alone doesn't start your notice period.
